The weight plates are made of cast iron, the bars and spin locks are made of steel. The weight plates are black.
These are very well made, and the spin locks don't become lose!
I've had NO problems with the hand grips, I've been using them a few weeks now, and my hands are fine. (Smooth, textured and engraved grip)
Plenty of room to add extra/heavier weight plates....standard 1 inch holes. You can buy additional Golds Gym weight plates; of the same style......Search: Golds Gym hammertone weight plates
I would have happily paid more for them. They are better than the York equivalent in my opinion, these are nicer to lift and they feel more balanced.
You've heard of man crisps? These are man weights;
One dumbbell is 10kg- that's with all the provided weight plates attached.
1 bar and two spin locks come to 1.5kg + 2 x 2.5kg plates + 2 x 1.25kg plates + 2 x 0.5kg plates = 10kg per dumbbell.
"Hammertone" is a paint finish.

Good piece of kit - basic and easy to use, but they do the job they are intended for, and a darn sight cheaper than visiting the gym 3 times a week!
